Wow – what are great “GOOD TURN for STAMFORD!!”

Thank you to all of the leaders, volunteers, parents and children that participated in the 6th Annual Hit-A-Thon on Sunday night. We had a blast! Everyone was organized, bellies were filled with Hope Pizza J and of course, a BIG KUDOS to my better half, Mitchell Nathanson – your organizational skills are priceless. B.B. from the Bluefish came and signed autographs – I attached some pictures. ItsRelevant.com covered the story.

We are pretty certain we hit our goal of $4,000 to New Covenant House of Hospitality thanks to corporate sponsors as well as from the Silent Auction.

If we not able to join us at the event, but would still like to donate, please bring a check (payable to Pack 48) or cash to the next pack meeting, February 9th. We will present the check to New Covenant House at our Blue and Gold Dinner, on March 9th.

Look out for an email regarding the February Pack meeting location – which has changed, just for the February meeting to the Trinity Catholic Middle School gym. Webelos 2 Den is hosting “Health and Fitness the Cub Scout Way”.

Thank you again!! See you soon!!

Stamford Cub Scout Pack 48 plans to assist the New Covenant House of Hospitality
In their 6thAnnual 2013 “Hitting Home” Charity Hit-A-Thon Event

The Cub Scouts of Pack 48 in Stamford will be holding their 6th annual charity drive, the “Hitting Home” Charity Hit-A-Thon on Sunday, January 27th at Bobby Valentine’s Sports Academy on Camp Avenue in Stamford CT. This year the boys are looking forward to knocking another fundraiser out of the park in support of another local charity.

The 2013 Hit-A-Thon is dedicated to assisting families in need of nourishment.
In October 1978, New Covenant House of Hospitality served its first meal from the basement of a little building at 66 West Main Street, Stamford.  Since then thousands of hungry people have found physical and social nourishment at NCH. Forced from our West Main Street residence in January 1990, we established a long-term home at our present location in the Yerwood Center, 90 Fairfield Avenue, on Stamford’s West Side. Through the generosity of volunteers and area organizations, as well as the City of Stamford and under the leadership of Catholic Charities of Fairfield County, we were able to build a first class kitchen and serving area to feed our guests. Now 32 years later, we are serving approximately 550,000 meals annually.

The Cub Scouts of Pack 48 are currently obtaining pledges to support their batting performance during the event.  The Pack hopes to donate a minimum of $4,000 to New Covenant House of Hospitality.  In January, each Scout will step into a batting cage at Bobby Valentine’s Sports Academy, and do their best to hit their personal and Pack fundraising goals.

There will also be an Open Swing Session open to the public where, for a $10.00 Donation, families can participate and compete for a prize. Please feel free to join in the fun!  Details are posted to their website www.pack48.org.

The event has grown each year, as evidenced by the long term and growing support of its community sponsors and program partners, including

Bobby Valentine’s Sports Academy, the Bridgeport Bluefish, First County Bank, Hope Pizza, Landserve, P2Telecom, Proforma, and Tripp’s Restaurant.

About Pack 48’s “Hitting Home” Charity Hit A Thon
Inspired by six boys in a Cub Scout Den who wanted to help out their community, the Pack 48 “Hitting Home” Charity Hit-A-Thon has become an annual event, raising over $21,000 for local charities since its first event in 2008.  The program provides a platform for our Cub Scouts to give back to children in need in our community, while having fun during an activity that promotes family, fitness and community.  Each of Pack 48’s Cub Scouts truly live up to the motto of “Do Your Best” and have successfully realized the program’s goals each year:

  • In 2008, Pack 48 held their first Hit-A-Thon to establish an entertainment lending library of DVDs and Video Games to entertain younger patients in StamfordHospital’s Pediatric Unit.  They rose over $5,000,purchased all of the equipment, and constructed a rolling cart to house all of the items so the library could be shuttled from bedside to bedside.
  • The 2009, Hit-A-Thon was dedicated to Circle of Care Organization, which serves families with children undergoing cancer treatment in Fairfield County.  The Cub Scouts are raised funds to support the organization’s “Art from the Heart” program, where volunteers create Room Makeovers that transform a recovering child’s bedroom at home into a personal wonderland.  To date, three rooms in Connecticut have been renovated as a result of Pack 48’s efforts and others are scheduled.
  • In 2010, the Stamford Police Department received nearly 400 bears from Pack 48’s Hit-A-Thon, helping to restore the RESCUE BEAR Program. The program, which will allow officers arriving at the scene to provide traumatized children with an item that comforts and calms them in a difficult, and sometimes frightening, environment. Bears are typically distributed through incidents that involve the Youth Services & Domestic Violence Divisions. The Pack 48 Cubs built the bears at Build-a-Bear in Trumbull, CT.
  • In 2011, the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County re-stocked their pantry shelves in the Springwith $5,300 from the Pack 48’s Hit-A-Thon – a market value of approximately $35,000 in food according to Kate Lombardo, Director of the Food Bank.
  • In 2012, Pack 48 sent two children to summer camp for Hole in the Wall Gang Campwith $3,500.
  • About Cub Scout Pack 48:
Cub Scout Pack 48 is part of the Powahay Council of the BSA of Connecticut.
